Dryer Fire Leaves Home with $200,000 in Damages - By Bryn Weese - North Bay Nugget (6/9/2007)

NORTH BAY ONTARIO, CANADA - A clothes dryer with a plastic flexible vent pipe is the culprit in a house fire that broke out early Friday morning causing nearly $200,000 in damage.  Randy Vezina, the city's chief fire prevention officer, said the cause of the fire was lint, dust and other matter that had accumulated on the bottom of the dryer, near the heating element, which can reach 500 C during a drying cycle. The debris caught fire and ignited the plastic vent duct which carried the flames into the walls of the house and into the ceiling.  here is heavy fire, smoke and water damage throughout the home, Vezina said, which will cost almost $200,000 to fix.  Vezina said the city's fire department has been encouraging residents not to use plastic to vent dryers.  It's a petroleum product, he said, that burns fast and hot. Instead, Vezina said dryers should be vented with aluminum or other non-combustible material made to withstand high temperatures.
